Human Services Minister Nat Cook is on cloud nine with the birth of her first grandchild, with the little miracle’s name a touching nod to her late son.

Ms Cook and her husband Neil Davis lost their eldest child Sam, a budding young footballer, at 17 after he was struck in an unprovoked attack at a party in Brighton.

On August 7, Ms Cook and Mr Davis’ daughter Sheree Davis and her partner Steven Wallbridge welcomed their first child Flynn Samuel, named in a surprising — and emotional — tribute to Sam’s legacy.

Ms Cook said she and her husband are incredibly moved by the decision to reflect their “love and care for Sam” in the newest member of the family.

“We didn’t have any idea they’d chosen Samuel as a middle name, it completely surprised us — we were really emotional about that,” Ms Cook said.

“It’s just such a beautiful way to remember Sam and how valuable life is for everyone”.

Flynn becomes a nephew to Ms Cook and Mr Davis’ miracle second bub Sid, now 11, born four years after Sam’s death.

Living just a few blocks away from their new grandson, Ms Cook said they planned on showering Flynn with love and visiting for regular bedtime stories.

“Family is everything and our family knows this only too well,” she said.

Ms Cook and Mr Davis, founded the Sammy D Foundation, with the ultimate aim of providing skills to young people in order to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
