About 1500 chickens have been killed or euthanised after a truck rolled south-west of Murray Bridge.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Schulz Rd and Golf Course Rd at Kepa just after 5am after reports a truck carrying 3200 chickens had come off the road.

The truck had completely rolled off the road and initially did not pose as an obstacle for motorists.

A heavy-vehicle tow truck was arranged so the vehicle could be turned upright and pulled from the crash scene.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

RSPCA SA inspectors are at the scene, where about half of the chickens have died or been euthanased.

The surviving birds will be transported to the Inghams’ processing facility for immediate slaughter and used for fertiliser and not human consumption.

The truck had only just left an Inghams’ chicken production property at Kepa and was

enroute to the Burton processing facility when the crash happened.

SA Police went to the scene just after 6.30am after a milk truck lost its load on the thoroughfare.

Nineteen crates were smashed on the road, but were quickly packed up and moved off the road by police officers.

A short time later, a rubbish truck on the South-Eastern Freeway near the Hahndorf exit had a malfunction which saw it unload its contents on to the road.

Police said the incident was caused by a mechanic fault which has been deemed not suspicious.
