Four weeks after the birth of her first child, Megan Evelyn Timbs was found unresponsive in bed by her partner Bailey Turner.
Mr Turner called triple-zero and frantically began CPR on the mother of his child until the ambulance arrived at their Broken Hill home.
While paramedics were able to start the 24-year-old’s heart again, after being transferred from the local hospital to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide doctors discovered the mum had zero brain function.
On December 7 Megan Timbs, surrounded by family and friends, was pronounced dead after her breathing tubes were removed.
Her best friend of nine years, Kimberly Abdilla, said Megan “always filled the room with so much love and happiness”.
“She was always someone anyone could go to and she’d take the time out of her day to talk to them and reassure them if that’s what they needed or just chat,” she said.
“She was always there to listen.”
Ms Abdilla said Megan, who she called the “brightest star”, had always dreamt of becoming a mother.
“When Ilah was finally born, she was complete,” she said.
Ilah Rose Turner, Megan and her partner Bailey’s first child, was born on November 7, 2023, exactly one month before Megan suddenly lost her life.
“As soon as Ilah was born … she was this whole mum, like she’d been a mum for 18 years,” Ms Abdilla said.
“She was amazing.”
Megan met the love of her life Bailey three years ago and began dating in January of this year.
“Bailey was the one for her … she found her soulmate,” Ms Abdilla said.
“She was so, so happy with him, couldn’t wait to start her little family.
“When she got the chance to she was complete, it’s like the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Her life was Ilah.”
Megan loved the beach and sunsets and recently moved from Adelaide to Broken Hill for a change of scenery.
“When she moved away to start a new chapter she didn’t really get down to the beach as much, but when she travelled down with Bailey, they made sure to either drive past the beach or sit down there and talk about life together,” Ms Abdilla said.
Ms Abdilla, 21, who met Megan at a bus stop nine years ago, was talking to Megan on the phone a few hours before she went into cardiac arrest.
“We were talking about the next time I was going to see her, and it turned out, the next time I saw her was probably one of the worst days of my life,” she said.
Ms Abdilla’s last time with Megan was at the RAH sitting by her side in her final moments.
Megan was born on August 14, 1999 and died December 7, 2023. She was 24.
She is survived by her partner Bailey Turner, daughter Ilah Rose Turner, mother-in-law Cate Barret, sister-in-law Chavahli Turner, brother-in-law Rogan Turner and friends Kimberly Abdilla, India Amos, Tahlia Lister, Kaylee Caruso and Zali Walsh.
There has been an outpouring of support for the young family with a GoFundMe reaching more than $15,000 in five days.
Former Adelaide Crows captain Taylor ‘Tex’ Walker posted on his Instagram story in tribute of Megan, encouraging donations to the family.
