Noah Macgowan has been named The Advertiser’s 2023 Kid Mullet Cup winner.

The 11-year-old lives in Stansbury on the Yorke Peninsula and was ecstatic when he found out that he had won the crown from the top 50 finalists.

“I’m so excited and shocked, this is awesome … I’m the GOAT of mullets,” Noah said.

Noah’s parents, Blake and Ebony Macgowan, said they wanted to enter Noah’s mullet into last year’s Kid Mullet Cup but missed the cut-off date to enter.

“Noah said at the start of Covid ‘yep I might grow a mullet’, and I was thinking it was only going to be for a few weeks while we were in lockdown – but it has stayed and isn’t going anywhere,” Ms Macgowan said.

Mr Macgowan said Noah has always been a kid with interesting hairdos.

He had dreadlocks from age three to eight but shaved them off to raise money for his friend struggling with lupus.

“He always wanted to raise money if he was going to shave the dreads off and he raised about $23,000,” Mr Macgowan said.

“It makes it easier for us to spot him in a crowd, because of his big blonde flowing mullet.”

The mullet champ’s mum keeps his locks in shape at her home salon, Hair @ Luxe. She said she has cut more mullet styles in the last few years than she has in her entire 25 years in hairdressing.

Noah is in year six at Minlaton District School where he has become a bit of a trendsetter among his sport teams.

“We don’t want to float his own boat but ever since Noah got his mullet probably six different teammates have come to Ebony asking for mullets,” Mr Macgowan said.

Noah has taken home a personalised 2023 Kid Mullet Cup trophy, as well as a year’s worth of bragging rights.

Meet the rest of the Top 5 in the 2023 Kid Mullet Cup …

2ND: Jedrik Jachmann, 6, of Cadell

Jedrik’s mum Leah Wakefield said he has been growing his curly long mullet since he was two.

“He’s had it since he could grow hair … he’s just always had it and absolutely loves it,” Ms Wakefield said.

Jedrick joins his dad, Matt, who has had a mullet since before he was born.

Jedrick recently came second in another mullet competition as well as a people’s choice award for the mullet fest in 2022.

Terrific twins Brody and Jett were nominated by their mum Loren. They started growing their blonde curly mullets about two years ago.

The pair were inspired by their dad who has been sporting the mullet cut for most of their lives.

“One of my friends had the haircut, but he cut it off at Christmas, so now it’s only me and Brody that have the mullet,” Jett said.

4TH: Mason Sharrock, 10, of Strathalbyn

Mason’s been growing his locks since December 2020 and now has competitions with his teacher to see how long he can go between trims.

“It all started with my friends getting a mullet which made me think I should get one too,” Mason said.

Mason along with six of his friends started a ‘Mullet Gang’ at his school, Eastern Fleurieu.

“Some of the boys have left now but I’m over here still growing mine. Mine suits me so I won’t stop growing it.” Mason said.

Jack’s been growing his mullet for just over a year and was begging his parents for the hairstyle for another year before that let him grow it.

“All his mates at the footy club had them and having a mullet just seemed like the trend at the time,” Jack’s mum Kylie Caruso said.

“We joke all the time that we’re going to get the clippers and cut it off and he’s like ‘no, no not my mullet!’

Jack loves to show off and shake his mullet after a shower and also lets his older sister straighten and style his hair for him.
