If John Farmham and Bailey Smith’s mullet fused into one cross-generational hairstyle, Archie Kent’s lavish blonde mane would be the end result.

The 13-year-old from Berri entered The Advertiser’s 2023 Kid Mullet Cup Competition, giving the other contenders a run for their money.

The annual competition searches for youngsters who are rocking the best mullet in the state, and the winner gets The Advertiser’s Kid Mullet Cup trophy.

Archie, who started growing his mullet when he was about nine years old, said the hairstyle was a homage to Western Bullbogs football player, Bailey Smith.

“I used to have one about four years ago, but it was a smaller one, then I cut it off,” he explained. “Then Bailey Smith inspired me because he had one, and I wanted one like his.”

Archie believes the mullet hair styles is making a slow comeback among his group of friends.

He says, “I’m not the only one that has it, a few of my friends have shorter ones that are up to their neck. I think it is a trend.

“The other boys started getting them last year or the year before that. But they all kept it short because they don’t want it like mine.

While sporting the shoulder-length mullet, Archie’s father believes he’s a replica of John Farham in the 80s.

“Dad said I look just like him, I look similar but I wouldn’t say exactly,” Archie said.

Earlier this week, twin brothers Brody and Jett Varnhagen, 8, from Meadows, helped kick off the competition with their identical trendy haircut.

Nominated by their mum, Loren, the identical brothers started growing their luscious blonde locks about two years ago.

The pair were inspired to look like their father, who had been sporting the mullet hairstyle for most of their lives.

“One of my friends had the haircut, but he cut it off at Christmas, so now it’s only me and Brody that have the mullet,” Jett said.

Brody said the brothers do not always have matching hairstyles, but he’s eager to win this year’s competition with their “cool” haircuts.

The contest is open to all kids who are 18 and under, with the winner taking home the Kid Mullet Cup trophy and boasting rights for the next 12 months.

If your kid has the best mullet in town, submit your nomination before Monday, January 30, at 8am. We’ll then narrow the entries down to finalists and put it to a reader vote.

Last year, Ryder Bushell was crowned The Advertiser’s Kid Mullet Cup 2022 winner, after beating more than 200 entries to take home the title for his lavish locks.

MULLET THE COOLEST CUT IN TOWN

The mullet haircut has transcended through time becoming an iconic hairstyle, with youngsters now dubbing it as one of the coolest cuts in town.

Levi Casey, 10, of Parafield Gardens, has also been rocking his magnificent mullet for the last three years, with barbers at Slick Lobster regularly refreshing his look.

Aged seven, Levi asked to get the haircut after seeing famous sports stars like Western Bulldogs player Bailey Smith rocking the haircut.

“I saw a few sports players with hair like this, so I wanted to get the same hair cut,” he said.

Levi says he stands out among his group of friends, since he’s the only one who has the trendy hair cut.

Dad Nathan remembers when Levi first got the haircut, which wasn’t quite embraced by the senior students at his school.

Two years later, as the mullet trend regains popularity among school kids, Levi was preparing his locks to enter this year’s Kid Mullet Cup.
