The director of one of South Australia’s most prominent hospitality organisation has been remembered as “kind and lovely” by family and friends after his sudden death.

The Matthews Hospitality Group confirmed the death of Ward Matthews earlier this month, saying they are “shocked and devastated” at his unexpected passing.

“We feel a great sense of loss as we come to terms with his death and ask for privacy during this difficult time,” they said.

Ian Horne from the Australian Hotels Association (SA) also paid tribute to Mr Matthews.

“Ward was a much valued member of the South Australian hotel community and an integral part of the highly successful Matthews Hospitality Group, a multi-generational South Australian family company.” Mr Horne said.

“His participation in and contribution to the hotel industry will be greatly missed. Our condolences go to the extended Matthews family.”

A friend of the family, Lyn Gaston posted an emotional tribute to Mr Matthews’ partner Mardi on Facebook on Tuesday evening.

“Just over a week ago I found out that Ward Matthews had left this world,” the post said.

“He always wanted to help wherever he was, especially when he attended the kids’ birthday parties,” the post said.

“I think one of the very best memories I have is when you both (Mr Matthews and Mardi) helped the kids decorate our Xmas tree.

“We miss him with you Mardi – life will never be the same but he’ll always be in your heart.”

The comment section was also filled with heartfelt messages, including one describing Mr Matthews as being “kind and lovely”.

The Matthews family has operated hotels for more than 70 years, since patriarch Seymour Matthews and wife Doris started investing during World War II.

The dynasty began when the pair acquired their first pub, the Hotel Bay View in Whyalla, in 1942 before going on to operate up to 27 hotels by the 1960s.

The family is credited with offering the first counter meals in Australia, at the Largs Pier Hotel, the first drive-through bottle-shop, and the first smorgasbord at the Buckingham Arms.

Grandchildren Lisa and Scott, previously accompanied by Ward, oversee Matthews Hospitality’s ten pubs in Adelaide, Whyalla, Mount Gambier and Clare, recently acquiring the historic Sussex Hotel.

Their uncle, Guy, and cousins Shaun, Brett and William, also recently acquired the Flagstaff and Mansfield Park hotels, while Brett has partnered with prominent hoteliers Ed Peter and Martin Palmer on several other projects.

Matthews Hospitality is one of the state’s largest family-operated pub groups, employing about 400 people.
