Marion Council libraries staffers Jasmine Argent and Denise Martin ‘blown away’ by surprise Instagram fame

A pair of Adelaide library staff members in Adelaide say they are stunned by the global response to a video they posted online to promote free local services.

By Monday afternoon, the City of Marion Libraries Instagram account had drawn an international audience with its latest video attracting 3.1m views and 186,000 likes on Instagram.

In the humorous, deadpan video captioned: “When your boss says it’s not a two-person job”, two bored-looking workers are seen undertaking routine tasks together in proximity such as scanning a library card, putting books on shelves and wiping a table.

The duo depicted in the post, Jasmine Argent and Denise Martin, said they were shocked by the attention the post received.

“It’s super exciting because we’re just an Adelaide library page,” Ms Argent, 30, the library’s marketing and communications officer, said.

The inspiration for the video came as part of a trend, which another library tagged them in.

“Our aim is just to promote libraries and that’s what these videos are about,” Ms Argent said.

Her colleague, Ms Martin, 59, said everyone at the library was “all blown away” by the number of views on the video.

“Hopefully it’s gaining some traction for our free services,” the branch operations manager at the Hallett Cove library said.

Ms Martin said she was even recognised at her local supermarket following the success of the video.

Viewers from across the world enjoyed the lighthearted post.

Some commenters chimed in from as far as the Adelaide suburb’s namesake, Marion, Ohio in the United States.

“I got excited thinking I could meet this cool duo but then I realised …” the commenter said.

“Do I live anywhere near this place? No, am I going to follow the page anyway? Hell yes,” another wrote.

Other commenters enjoyed the dynamic between the younger and older colleagues.

“Younger colleague kidnapping older for sake of social media glory,” one said.

Marion Council runs three libraries at Oaklands Park, Hallett Cove and Park Holme.
