Man rushed to hospital following incident at Wilmington Rodeo Club

A man has suffered injuries to his leg following an incident reportedly involving a bull.

An extreme sportsman has recalled the harrowing moment he fell off a raging bull, in front of hundreds of people, at a weekend rodeo in a small town in the state’s Mid North.

Lachlan Rothwell, 21, had been participating as a bull rider at the Willmington Night Rodeo on Saturday, when he was viciously dragged by the bull.

“I just got hung up and dragged beside the bull. He stomped my ankle and I felt it pop back and snap,” he said.

“I ended up getting out of the hangup.”

The Tintinara local said he rode the bull for about five seconds, before he came off, and knew something was wrong when he “felt pain”.

“Turns out my ankle is broken,” he said.

“I knew it was broken once I couldn’t get up”.

Mr Rothwell was quickly taken to The Port Augusta Hospital, where he now remains, as he awaits surgery to treat his injury.

He said the terrifying incident has not deterred him from riding bulls, having partaken in the extreme sport since he was 19-year old.

“I’ll get back on once I feel good enough,” he said.

Emergency services were called to the club to assist Mr Rothwell, just after 11pm and he was taken to Port Augusta Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The club posted a video of another man riding a bull into the rodeo arena on Saturday with the words: “open bullriders and the bullfighting clowns in action at Wilmington Rodeo”.

On the post some expressed concern for the injured man. “Hope the guy who got injured is okay,” one commenter wrote on a post sharing a video from the event.

Another person said the man suffered a broken leg and has been taken to hospital.

The Advertiser is not suggesting the man was injured in the event nor that he is the same person featured in the video.

The club has been contacted for comment.

Meanwhile on Sunday, emergency services were called to a Strathalbyn Racing track on Dry Plains Rd at Strathalbyn, about 62 km from Adelaide, after a person had come off a horse just before 1.30pm.

A spokesperson for SA Ambulance said the man, aged in his 20s, was taken to The Royal Adelaide Hospital after sustaining non-life threatening injuries.
