A man has made a terrifying getaway from a hit-run crash, using an axe to break through his windscreen before running from the scene.

The man was speeding through Angle Park in a stolen car on Saturday afternoon, when he failed to give-way on Days Road causing a high-speed crash.

Security camera footage obtained by 7News shows witnesses coming to the aid of the occupants in each vehicle.

But with the stolen car laying on its side, the wanted man started smashing his windscreen with an axe.

He eventually climbed through and ran away.

A police officer was just metres away from the scene, but didn’t notice the offender running away.

Alicia Bartley told 7News she heard tyres screeching in the lead up to the crash.

“Then I heard this massive thud, like it was huge,” she said.

In the footage, the sole occupant of the other vehicle, a 48-year-old woman, could be seen limping from the scene.

“She was yelling out my car’s on gas and once she said that I ran over and grabbed her,” Ms Bartley said.

She was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The wanted driver remains at large.

“What about if that was his sister or what about if it was his mother or what about if it was his daughter in an accident like that,” Ms Bartley said.

“Wouldn’t you want that person to stay there and check that person was okay.”
