Federal Election: Multiple candidates dumped amid scandals

The man Boothby MP Nicolle Flint claims is stalking her has been cautioned by police over his behaviour.

The Sunday Mail can reveal that police this afternoon visited the house of Clarence Gardens man David Walsh - who was at the centre of a police complaint lodged by Ms Flint on Friday.

“Police can confirm that a 64-year-old man from Clarence Gardens received a stalking caution,” an SA Police spokesman said.

Mr Walsh, commenting after the police visit, said: “I have not and will not be charged with any offence”.

Mr Walsh had told the Sunday Mail on Saturday he had done nothing wrong and was a “law-abiding citizen”.

Ms Flint, the Liberal incumbent for the state’s most marginal seat, reported on Friday that she has been stalked during the Federal Election campaign.

Mr Walsh had denied any wrongdoing in relation to his conduct towards Ms Flint.

“I’m a law-abiding citizen just like you are,” he told the Sunday Mail at his house on Saturday, prior to the police caution.

“I have done nothing wrong.”

It is understood Mr Walsh has regularly attended and taken photographs of Ms Flint at campaign and community events.

On Friday, he stood outside a function attended by Ms Flint at Blackwood and took photographs through a window.

On his personal Facebook page on April 23 he posted photographs featuring Ms Flint during Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s visit to Adelaide.

He captioned a picture of Mr Morrison talking to Ms Flint, who had her head cast downwards: “Didn't I tell you to keep your mouth shut while I'm talking?”.

He told the paper that he was a “Mitcham resident and I turn up at Mitcham events - that’s end of story”.

Former Mitcham mayor Glenn Spear, who led the council from 2014 to 2018, said Mr Walsh would often take photographs of him at community events.

He acknowledged the behaviour was not illegal but was “strange”.

“(It was) just the way he did it, and accompanying some of those pictures were defamatory posts so his intent was malicious,” he said.

“I’m a public figure and I would have chatted to him…but they were creepy, hidden photographs that he would post (online).”

Ms Spear, who described the behaviour as harassment, sued Mr Walsh in 2016 for defamation over a series of social media posts about him.

Mr Spear said Mr Walsh paid him an undisclosed amount as part of a confidential settlement.

Mr Walsh declined to comment on the case.

Ms Flint’s police report came after a volunteer for Centre Alliance MP for Mayo Rebekha Sharkie was charged with stalking Liberal candidate Georgina Downer.
