LIV Golf’s future in South Australia is secure for at least another three years, Premier Peter Malinauskas announced on Sunday morning.
Mr Malinauskas announced on Sunday South Australia would play host to LIV Golf until 2028, with plans in place to continue hosting until 2031.
Plans to take the blockbuster golfing event to bigger, better greens is at the forefront of the state government’s plans, moving it from its regular location at the Grange Golf Club after 2028 to an redeveloped, world-class course at North Adelaide.
“LIV Golf has brought significant global attention to South Australia – and I am
delighted to confirm that we have secured the rights to host LIV Golf in Adelaide until 2031,” Mr Malinauskas said.
“But more than that, I’m thrilled that we will be delivering something truly
unique – world golf on the doorstep of one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
“If a kid grows up today in South Australia, [and] says I want to play on the same course as my hero they can’t,” he said.
“In 2028 they will be able to do that [at North Adelaide].”
Mr Malinauskas said the government had not reached a final figure on the cost to upgrade North Adelaide and said the configuration of the new course was still being decided.
He said the move there would be unlikely to happen before 2028.
“[North Adelaide] will be one of the world’s best public golf courses.”
“Critically this is a state government investment for 100 per cent public ownership.”
The new North Adelaide plans include a course specially designed by LIV Golf founding commissioner and the “world’s best golf course designer” Greg Norman.
“We wanted to make it easy for patrons and guests coming from interstate and overseas,” Malinauskas said of the location change.
“Anyone that’s tried to get an uber or a taxi along with 30,000 other people at 8pm at Grange knows it isn’t too easy.”
LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil said the Adelaide event was the “embodiment of what LIV Golf represents”
“Thank you to Premier Peter Malinauskas for his leadership and commitment to LIV Golf for the long term. LIV Golf Adelaide is our showcase and brings the vision for all our events across the globe to life,” Mr O’Neil said.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to honor what this community has helped us build over the last three years through a partnership that will take it to even greater heights for years to come.”
Mr Norman added that Adelaide has served the event brilliantly over the past three years.
“LIV Golf Adelaide is the realization of what LIV Golf can be around the world,” he said.
It comes after the Victorian opposition’s deputy leader has signalled he wanted to snatch LIV Golf from Adelaide.
Liberal major events spokesman Sam Groth was in Adelaide for this year’s tournament, meeting with LIV’s former chief executive Mr Norman and Mr Malinauskas, as they enjoyed the action from Grange Golf Club’s Watering Hole on Saturday.
Mr Groth confirmed he had met with the league’s powerbrokers with an eye to bringing the hugely successful event to Melbourne.
“I’ve met them while I’ve been over here, absolutely,’’ he said on Saturday.
Opposition leader Vincent Tarzia said he wanted to ensure transparency on the North Adelaide project’s costs.
“LIV Golf has our bipartisan support as a tourism drawcard for our state,” Mr Tarzia said.
“However we call on the government to be transparent about the cost and economic benefits of this investment.”
