Large truck fire forces closure of Wirriga Rd, Regency Park

Hazmat and the special operations team from SA Ambulance Service had to be called in to help contain a large truck fire overnight that led to a road closure.

A large truck fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning forced the closure of a Regency Park road on Monday.

The blaze was reported to emergency services staff just before 1am on Wirriga St, with MFS fire crews, police and the special operations team from SA Ambulance Service responding to the calls.

Specialist hazmat crews were also called in to help to control the blaze, which totally gutted the truck, about four hours after it was initially reported.

Police said Wirriga Rd would remain closed on Monday morning with diversions in place on Kateena St while crews monitored hot spots from the fire.

Chemicals on-board the truck burned, and the blaze’s cause was not suspicious.

In other overnight police news, a drink driver has lost his licence after members of the public saw a motorhome being driven erratically on Port Wakefield Rd about 9.20pm Sunday.

Police pulled over the driver at Two Wells, and the driver was breath tested and returned a positive result of 0.213 – four times the legal limit of 0.05.

He lost his licence for a year and his motorhome was impounded for a month.

He was reported for drink driving and will appear in court at a later date.

A drink driver was also arrested after crashing into multiple parked cars at Oakden.

The Mitsubishi Lancer allegedly crashed on Attingham Crescent just after 1am Monday.

Police breath tested the driver, who returned a positive result of 0.179, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.05.

The driver, a Kilkenny man, 23, was arrested and charged with drink driving, driving without due care and attention, and hindering police.

He lost his licence for a year and his vehicle was towed from the scene.

He was bailed to appear in court at a later date.
