The husband of a woman left for dead in a hit-and-run crash last year has publicly spoken for the first time outside of court.
In February 2023, 44-year-old Sonja Maus was cycling to work along Churchill Rd, Kilburn, when a white van struck her from behind.
The driver, Travis Wayne Turner, 45, of Somerton Park, was caught on CCTV pulling over and sprinting toward Ms Maus, before turning back to his vehicle and fleeing the scene.
The Mile End woman was rushed to hospital with numerous broken bones and bleeding on the brain, while Mr Turner was found and arrested two weeks later.
Leaving court on Tuesday after reading a victim impact statement, Dwayne Hindson told 9News he and his wife’s family were still deciding whether to accept a written apology from the driver.
“She’s doing OK … as best as can be expected,” Mr Hindson said.
“I don’t wish anything upon anyone. I just hope he understands how it’s affected people, that’s all.”
Mr Turner pleaded guilty to causing harm by dangerous driving last July, and further pleaded guilty last September to leaving the scene of an accident after causing harm.
Ms Maus’s family faced the man who nearly killed her in court, having read an impact statement to him and Judge Anthony Allen.
Mr Turner was remanded on continuing bail and is due to return to court in April for further submissions on sentencing.
