The South Eastern Freeway will be closed to all city-bound traffic on Friday evening when the Heysen Tunnels are shut for “essential maintenance”.

Hills-bound traffic will be restricted to one lane.

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure has revealed the rare closure of the tunnels, with all traffic inbound to the city detoured via Eagle On The Hill from 7pm, Friday, to 8am, Saturday.

Traffic leaving the city will be restricted to one lane in the Crafers bound tunnel from 9pm, Friday, until 8am, Saturday.

A Department spokesman said the closures were to carry out maintenance works on the ventilation system.

“Every effort will be made to reduce the impact on motorists by conducting these works during off peak times,’’ the spokesman said.

“Emergency vehicles will have access to the tunnels at all times.

“Speed restrictions will be in place at this location while the maintenance work is undertaken.

“Adelaide Hills bus services will detour via Eagle On The Hill during these works. No bus stops will be missed.

“The department thanks motorists for their patience during these important works.”
