A grass fire at Pewsey Vale, near Tanunda, which was on Monday threatening residents in Rowland Flat has been contained by firefighters overnight, as police declare it suspicious.

But the CFS has warned the fire may continue to cause smoke in the area, towards Rowland Flat and Tanunda.

“Members of the community are urged to close all doors and windows and stay indoors,” the message said.

The CFS issued a Watch and Act message for the fire around 7pm, about two hours after the fire started.

CFS firefighters were supported by six aircraft and eight local farm firefighting units, who worked with crews on the ground to contain the fire by 9pm, preventing it from spreading to nearby towns.

Water bombers made 16 drops which helped slow the fire, which burned in hilly, difficult terrain.

The fire, which burned in heavy vegetation towards Princes Highway and Paralowie, was contained.

Roads were reopened but police warned to drive with caution due to the emergency services vehicles still in the area.

No houses were evacuated, but a Watch and Act message was sent out by CFS.
