Granite Island Causeway

New concept images and a video flyover have been released of the proposed $31m Granite Island causeway ahead of its imminent construction.

The concrete causeway – linking the popular tourism drawcard with Victor Harbor – will replace the existing 100-year-old state heritage-listed structure renowned for its horse-drawn tram.

There has been community opposition that the existing causeway was still in good condition and the government has not adequately justified the need to tear it down.

The Advertiser also reported in January scientists concerns about the impact of construction on the breeding grounds of southern right whales.

The Transport and Infrastructure department has proposed ceasing piling works if whales, dolphins, Australian sea-lions or little penguins enter a 300m exclusion zone.

The government argues the existing causeway is past its useful life and a new and wider structure will better serve the community.

The new causeway will incorporate recycled timber from the existing structure, which will remain open during construction of its replacement.

A second community information session will be held at the Victor Harbor Bowling Club on February 14, by registration.

Work on the new causeway is expected to start in March, pending approvals, and be finished by late 2021, weather permitting.
