Work to upgrade the Glen Osmond and Fullarton roads intersection will start next year, as the State Government confirms it will match money promised in the Federal Budget.

The $35 million project will be funded with a 50-50 split and is due for completion in 2022.

It is in the federal electorate of Sturt, where Liberal candidate James Stevens is expected to replace outgoing and long-serving MP Christopher Pyne.

However, SA Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas has publicly declared it a seat to watch as Labor seeks to claim it.

The intersection links the Hills and CBD areas, and 55,000 vehicles pass through it daily. Thirty-four crashes were recorded between 2013 and 2017, including eleven casualties.

SA Transport Minister Stephan Knoll said the upgrade would cut travel times and boost safety.

“This money is locked in,” Mr Knoll said. “The only risk to this intersection not being upgraded is a Bill Shorten government which does not commit to funding this project.”

Labor has been contacted for comment.

Federal Urban Infrastructure Minister Alan Tudge said the Coalition had pledged $5.3 billion in public transport and road infrastructure to bust SA congestion.

“This intersection upgrade will help cut travel times for motorists as well as help boost economic productivity by improved a key freight corridor,” he said.

The State Government says consultation will continue as a “preferred option” is developed.
