Commuters planning to travel on the Gawler rail line this long weekend will need to take alternative transport with the line to be temporarily shut for maintenance and level crossing renewal works.
The closure will be in place from 9pm on Friday to the last service on Monday, with services scheduled to return to normal on Tuesday morning.
Substitute buses will run throughout this period and service all stops between Adelaide Railway Station and Gawler Central Railway Station.
Racegoers going to and from the Barossa Cup on Monday will also be able to take advantage of the an extra bus stop that will operate near the Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club.
Work to the rail line will include station and signalling maintenance as well as level crossing and infrastructure upgrades.
The transport department said these works “cannot be safely undertaken while trains are operating in the electrified rail corridor”.
While the line is fully closed, works will also take place at the Hawker Street, North Adelaide level crossing.
The transport department said “some detours and bus stop closures will be in place in the area for motorists and Adelaide Metro bus routes”.
“The line closure has been carefully planned to minimise the impact on train passengers, nearby residents and road users but some delays are expected,” the department said.
Commuters are encouraged to plan extra time for their travel.
