Free Tasting Australia event: instant noodles get a chef makeover at The Noodle Cup

A meal cooked by a celebrated chef for just $5? You won’t believe this cheap staple can taste so good. Here’s where you’ll find this new Tasting Australia event.

They’re a student staple and perfect late-night snack – now instant noodles will get the star treatment at a new Tasting Australia event.

The Noodle Cup will have celebrated chefs Morgan McGlone, from Sydney’s Belles Hot Chicken, and Victor Liong, from Lee Ho Fook in Melbourne, put the Midas touch on the cheap pantry item, offering ideas for home cooks on a limited budget.

It comes as rising inflation rates increase the cost of food in South Australia.

The event at the University of Adelaide is free to attend, and a cup of chef-inspired noodles will cost $5.

“A lot of people are on a budget and don’t have $25 to go buy the best ramen in Adelaide,” said McGlone.

“You can pimp your noodles, refine them, by using these ingredients and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

“I’m putting in some pretty epic twists – there’ll be a dry noodle dish, it’s not going to be a soup-based one, and it will have a ginger and scallion sauce with Korean fish cake, fried spam and green onion and spinach kim chi.”

The event, which starts 12pm on May 6, is one of a number of budget-friendly events at this year’s Tasting Australia festival. Others include the Night Bazaar at Pirate Life in Port Adelaide ($10) on Wednesday from 5pm, and Harvest Pizza Party at Magarey Orchard in the Hills on May 6 and 7 ($20).

There is also a range of cooking demonstrations, including Urban Kitchen in Rundle Mall, and a new chef Storytellers Series in Victoria Square that are free to attend.

More than 1200 serves of noodles will be slurped at next Friday’s event.

“There’s not many places you’ll get a couple of chefs together for something like this,” McGlone said. “I reckon it’s going to be pretty great.”
