Fireys attend property fire in Woodville West causing nearby servo to close

More than 30 fireys have worked to contain a backyard blaze in Adelaide’s west – the second fire at the property in a year – which forced a nearby OTR to close.

Woodville West property fire causes nearby servo to close

A backyard fire in Adelaide’s western suburbs has caused a petrol station to close after flames were seen shooting up into the air.

The Metropolitan Fire Service is investigating a fire at a Woodville West home on Sunday afternoon, reportedly the second time the property has been ablaze.

The nearby On The Run service station was forced to close while firefighters contained the blaze.

The MFS determined the fire to be accidental, resulting in $20,000 damage to the property.

Emergency services were alerted to the residence just after 1pm and saw 32 firefighters, 12 appliances and a command vehicle arrive to find smoke billowing from a shed in the backyard.

The MFS were able to contain the blaze within 45 minutes of arriving, containing it to just the shed, protecting the residence and other parts of the property.

A neighbour from across the road, Steven Taylor, told The Advertiser that he walked out the front of his house and saw smoke and flames before he ran to the property to alert the owner.

“I just saw the flames shooting in the air and I called for my sister,” he said.

“We saw smoke and fire and everything and we went to the door to try and knock on the door to see if the owner was home.

“There was no answer and that’s when we saw these guys (fireys) come and as soon as the gates opened.

“They had to use a grinder for 10-minutes to open the gate so they could get in because they couldn’t get in and he (the owner) was on the other side of the gate, so they put the hoses over the fence.”

Mr Taylor said “it was not the first time” a fire had erupted at the property, with one sparking around the same time last year under similar circumstances.

“Last year it happened and this is the second fire to happen and the fire looks like it has happened in the same position,” he said.

The property, which is surrounded by high fences, appeared to have large amounts of junk and car parts, including an engine hoist in the backyard.

The Advertiser has approached the owner for comment.

There are no reports of injuries.
