Just as Findon-based store Soccer Locker recovers from one break-in, the small business is targeted again, and again, and again, bringing to light concerning crime numbers in the western suburb.
Adelaide’s only dedicated soccer store was robbed twice last month, and four times since late 2021.
Owner Jamie Goode said the break-ins have cost the business about $25,000, taking into account stolen goods, property damage and security measures, including a new electronic system, guards and shutters.
Mr Goode said the stress of the robberies has kept him up at night.
“I go to bed and expect to wake up to the news of another break in,” he said.
“We were in the process of opening a second store in the city. Recent events have set us back but we’re still going to do it. I won’t let the thieves win.”
CCTV footage captured the crimes, but the thieves have not been found.
Store manager Costa Zacharopoulos said the police have not provided the business with a sufficient update on the investigation.
“I haven’t heard anything about the first two break-ins,” he said.
“I was contacted for CCTV footage of the most recent break-in. I sent it through, but that’s it.”
Mr Zacharopoulos believes the location of the store is a hotspot for crime in the area.
“Other businesses on Grange Rd have been targeted as well,” he said.
A police spokesperson refuted claims the business had received limited communication from police, stating officers had been in contact with the business on numerous occasions.
Figures released annually by South Australian Police show offences categorised as “theft from shop” have been on the rise in Findon for 10 years.
In the 2011-12 period, the suburb recorded 21 cases, compared to 106 in the 2020-21 period.
“Total offences” in the suburb have also recorded consistent growth since 2018.
Western District police have implemented strategies to address criminal activity in the area, with a police spokesperson saying changes in demographic and “attractiveness of theft items” can contribute to increases in crime.
“Police regularly provide a highly-visible presence in Findon with a view to disrupt criminal behaviour,” the spokesperson said.
