The family of alleged murder victim Jasmeen Kaur, who was found buried in an makeshift grave, gathered at the site to mark what would have been her 22nd birthday.
Grief-stricken family members, including Ms Kaur’s aunty and uncle, travelled to Hawker, about 60 km north of Quorn, in the Flinders Ranges on Tuesday, to pay their respects.
They spent two hours at the site, placing flowers, balloons, a cake, and chicken nuggets – her favourite food – where she was buried in March.
“It’s very hard to go there, we were very emotional,” Ms Kaur’s aunty, Raman Kharoud, said.
“We were heartbroken … we still can’t get over that she is no longer with us.”
Police allege the Flinders Park woman was abducted from the nursing home at which she worked about 10pm on Friday, March 5. Tarikjot Singh, 20, of Kurralta Park was charged with Ms Kaur’s murder. Singh was known to Ms Kaur.
Six months after her niece’s tragic death, Ms Kharoud said she misses Ms Kaur every day.
“We see her in flowers, in balloons, everywhere,” she said.
“She liked everything, I never heard anything from her that she didn't like.”
Ms Kaur lived with Ms Kharoud, her uncle and cousin. The family have since moved homes over the pain left by Ms Kaur’s absence.
“It was very hard to stay there without her, there were so many memories in that house so we moved,” Ms Kharoud said.
Ms Kaur’s body was flown to India in April.
Her aunty said Ms Kaur’s mother, and twin siblings in India were still in shock.
“She always wanted to go back to her mother to visit her, but they never imagined that she’s going to come back like this, in a box.” Singh was remanded in custody, and will face court again in December.
