Enjoy the sun while you can, rain and thunderstorms are on the way

The sunny long weekend is about to give way to a week-long drenching as two rain systems wash away the warm weather across the country.

Weather To Watch

Enjoy the sunshine while you can this long weekend as the state is about to be hit with rain and possible thunderstorms early in the week.

Tuesday is tipped to be the wettest day as South Australia as well as every other state is expected to be hit with a week of rain and storms as two separate rain bands to soak the country.

Senior forecaster from the Bureau of Meteorology, Simon Timcke, said Adelaide could expect clouds and rain to return from Monday.

“After the cool and sort of dreary September we’ve had I think everyone has enjoyed this long weekend so far with the sunshine, but there is some weather on the way,” Mr Timcke said.

Mr Timcke said a low pressure trough has just moved into the far west of the state which has brought on extensive areas of cloud which will move slowly east.

“The Adelaide area and parts east of Adelaide will still remain dry on Monday … we’ll see cloud develop and gradually stick in during the day on Monday.” he said.

Places west of Adelaide can expect a chance of showers, rain and thunderstorms. The chance of thunderstorms will continue east as the trough moves eastwards.

“I think we’ll see showers develop Monday night into Tuesday morning here in Adelaide and over the remainder of the south and east of the state during Tuesday as well.” Mr Timcke said.

Wednesday morning and afternoon will see more showers but is expected to clear by the evening.

Another change will move from the west on Thursday, with the chance of showers redeveloping.

“We’re forecasting for Tuesday something in the range of eight to 15 millimetres at this stage … and then with the Thursday change we’re forecasting three to eight millimetres.” Mr Timcke said.

The rain is expected to reach the east coast by Thursday, while another significant weather system is set to emerge off south west WA, bringing fresh showers and possible storms on Wednesday.

Early forecasts predict the second rainband will move across South Australia on Thursday, reaching inland NSW on Friday.

The BOM has issued a flood watch for northern WA with the potential for flooded roads to impact and isolate communities.
