There’s been a huge surge in drivers running red lights at school zones in Adelaide – see which schools are affected most.

The number of motorists caught running red lights at school pedestrian crossings has surged by 46 per cent, with eastern-suburb residents among the worst offenders.

Figures obtained by the RAA reveal red-light offences are up from 2542 in 2020 to 3710 in 2021, with the highest number of offences caught outside Linden Park Primary.

Almost $258,000 worth in fines were issued outside the school on Portrush Road last year.

Red-light offences were also recorded outside Marryatville Primary, Ascot Park Primary, Goodwood Primary and Glenelg Primary.

RAA senior manager safety and infrastructure Charles Mountain said the red-light offences were the highest recorded since 2017.

Worryingly, latest police figures also show a 3 per cent increase in the number of drivers caught on camera speeding through school pedestrian crossings, up from 17,156 in 2020 to 17,739 last year.

“Drivers must be aware that speeding, running red lights and failing to give way can have potentially catastrophic consequences,’’ Mr Mountain said.

“Pedestrians – especially young children – are among the most vulnerable road users and the RAA urges motorists to be vigilant and cautious around schools.’’

With school returning on Monday, Mr Mountain urged drivers to observe the 25km/h limit when students were present in school zones.

“It’s important to remember that the lower speed limits apply whenever children are present and that can be outside of school hours and at weekend sporting activities,’’ he said

“Traffic increases with the return to school, so all commuters should allow greater travelling time if they’ve been leaving a little later over the past couple of weeks.”

Mr Mountain said the RAA would also help to educate more than 20,000 primary students and more than 2000 preschool children about road safety this school year.

RAA’s Street Smart Primary educators will visit more than 300 schools and 60 kindergartens across SA.
