A budding doctor who made her community “proud” has been identified as the victim of a fatal car crash in the Flinders Ranges.

Dr Esther Chong, 25, was killed when the Hyundai she was driving crashed head-on into a Isuzu ute on Sunday night on the Augusta Hwy at Woolundunga, at about 7pm.

A statement was sent to all intern doctors within the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) earlier this week informing them of the tragedy.

Dr Chong was on a surgical internship rotation at the Port Augusta Hospital at the time of the crash.

She was a former medical student at the University of Adelaide, where she was believed to have concluded her studies last year.

“The University of Adelaide community is deeply saddened, but very proud to have been part of Esther’s life, and extends its deepest condolences to her family,” a university spokeswoman said.

The university statement said support has been offered to students and staff.

“The university has mobilised support for both students and staff, in conjunction with CALHN.”

It is also understood that Dr Chong’s family was based in Victoria.

CALHN executive director of medical services Gerry O’Callaghan said Dr Chong’s death was upsetting and hard to accept.
“For those of you who knew Esther, please accept our deepest sympathy,” he said.

“Esther had a bright, promising future that has inexplicably been taken away.”
