A dog owner has been left “disgusted” by the actions of a regional council after her Australian shepherd dog was allegedly killed by neighbouring dogs in a vicious attack north of Adelaide.

Jasmin Dawe was shocked when she received a phone call from a neighbour on Tuesday, informing her that her Australian shepherd, Liberty, and staffy, Lily, had been attacked by another dog.

When she rushed to her home at Hewett, she found nine-year-old Liberty deceased and Lily barely clinging to life in her backyard after a neighbouring dog had broken through an iron fence.

”I’m pretty heartbroken and distraught,” Ms Dawe told 7News.

“I haven’t been able to sleep.”

Ms Dawe took to social media to share the heartbreaking news.

“Seven hours of surgery and thousands of dollars later we have been able to bring Lily home, however she is not out of the woods yet.”

The fence remains damaged.

Ms Dawe said the neighbours had “put a small scrap bit of material over it yesterday to stop their dogs coming back in while we were dealing with the mess in our yard”.

She said Light Regional Council had shown a “complete” lack of regard for their safety.

“Apparently this (fence) is still classed as “secure” after these dogs ripped through two sheets of iron in a stable fence yesterday and they cannot impound the dog,” Ms Dawe wrote on Facebook.

“What are we meant to do?”

She said they felt like they were in “immediate danger”.

The neighbours told 7News they were heartbroken and had contributed $5000 for vet bills.

They have put one dog down but the other one remains in the backyard.

Ms Dawe told 7News she believed the dog needed to be “destroyed”.

“There’s neighbours, children all around them on the other sides, what’s to stop them doing it again?” she said.

“I believe this dog needs to be destroyed.”

Light Regional Council issued a media release on Thursday confirming the attack was being investigated.

“Due to its nature, the investigation is a confidential process and council is unable to elaborate on details accordingly, however council would note that all parties are co-operating and assisting council with its investigation process, including managing the animals involved,” the statement read.

“Council acknowledges the community’s interest in this and similar matters and confirms that it is taking the matter very seriously and progressing its investigation accordingly with a view to determining any appropriate actions that may be required.”

Ms Dawe said she had not been contacted by council on Thursday.

“The last contact we had was a phone call I made to them asking for an update yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) and I was given nothing,” she said.

“I requested they call me back to keep me updated and I have not received one single phone call from them.”

The RSPCA has been contacted for comment.
