SA’s outback blanketed in thick hail with Andamooka, Flinders Ranges like winter wonderland
Mother Nature has blanketed SA’s outback in thick hail with the red dirt country instead resembling an icy, winter snow field.
SA outback communities were blanketed with ice after a hailstorm turned the red dust landscape into a winter wonderland
Videos emerged of thick hail on the road on Thursday afternoon in between Andamooka and Roxby Downs in SA’s north.
A handful of people braved the chill to play in the ice while making snow angels on the road.
The Andamooka Observatory also took to social media to remind locals to take care on slippery and wet roads.
“This afternoon brought a sudden downpour to Andamooka, and our main street – usually a dry creek bed – roared to life with fast-flowing floodwater,” the tour business posted.’
“A fierce hailstorm swept through town, covering the road and mullock heaps in a thick snow-like blanket.
“Locals could have mistaken it for a winter wonderland if not for the red outback peeking through.”
Meanwhile, the landscape was coated in thick layers of white hail between Wilpena and Rawnsley Park Coated in the Flinders Ranges.
But the wintry blast didn’t stop at the Outback.
In Port Noarlunga, a whopping “104,000 litres of water” had to be removed from the flooded footy oval ahead of a game on Saturday.
The Port Noarlunga Football Club posted a late-night thank you on Wednesday to Matt Hilton and Super Suction SA, along with the PNFC Masters crew, for clearing the soggy field.
Heavy, soaked turf can be a nightmare for players, making legs sluggish and stopping the ball from bouncing – potentially turning this weekend’s match into a mud-fest.
