Derrimut 24:7 to open largest gym in southern hemisphere at former Holden Elizabeth Plant

A popular fitness chain is set to open the biggest gym in the southern hemisphere – featuring a basketball court, plunge pools and saunas – in suburban Adelaide.

The new Derrimut 24:7 at the former Holden Elizabeth Plant will be the largest gym in the southern hemisphere when it opens its doors early-mid 2024.

The 7200 sqm space will take the mantle from the company’s Caroline Springs site in Victoria, and comprise a basketball court, reformer pilates, plunge pools and saunas, a women’s dedicated training area and “new digital training concepts”, said national brand manager Andre Pereira.

“Elizabeth promises to offer an unparalleled fitness experience,” Mr Pereira said, adding that the women’s fitness area would be the largest of all Derrimut 24:7 gyms.

“The largest ladies gym fit-out in South Australia is a significant milestone, reflecting the commitment of Elizabeth to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for all members.”

The gym chain, which started in Victoria, currently operates 26 sites across Victoria, South Australia and Queensland, with an aim to grow to 300 sites nationally and internationally by 2030.

Derrimut 24:7 Windsor Gardens is currently the biggest gym in the state.

The ambitious growth plans suggest a bounce-back for the fitness industry, which suffered a major blow as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A report from industry market research company IBISWorld, updated in February, states revenue of gyms and fitness centres in Australia has been declining by an annualised 6.8 per cent since 2018 to an estimated $2.2 billion through the end of 22-23.

It comes as multiple locations of the group fitness empire, F45, collapse as a result of crippling debt.

However, the report also predicts growth in the years 2023-2018 – and Mr Pereira is feeling confident.

“I can confidently say that the future of the fitness industry is looking very promising,” Mr Pereira said. “The Covid-19 pandemic certainly brought some challenges to our industry, but we have adapted and pivoted in response to these challenges by continuously looking at new ways to add to the experience along with introducing new assets to further enhance our modelling for all our members.

Mr Pereira said there was a “number of compelling reasons why it makes sense to build the largest gym in South Australia”.

“South Australia has a growing population, and there is a strong demand for fitness and wellness services in the region,” he said.

“In addition to this, South Australia has a well-established sporting culture, and additionally there is a real focus on health and fitness.”
