A CYCLIST wanted by police after he crashed into a female pedestrian and fractured one of her ribs has handed himself in.

Police said the cyclist stopped and spoke to the injured woman after he hit her from behind on the Currie St footpath in the city on April 1 but did not provide the victim with his details.

The injured woman Rebecca Bedford was treated for her injuries — which included internal bleeding — at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Following a police media release on Wednesday — which included a CCTV image of the rider — the man contacted them and he is currently assisting officers with their inquiries.

The victim’s ordeal was first reported in last weekend’s Sunday Mail and on Thursday she expressed delight that the rider had been caught on camera.

Rebecca Bedford said she had no warning when she was hit from behind and thrown into the air by the man who said “oh my god’’ and “are you OK’’ before he rode away while she was staggering around in shock.

“I wanted him identified and raise awareness of what’s going on with these new laws which allow cyclists to ride on footpaths’’ she said.

“I wasn’t lucky but it could have been worse and I’m worried this could happen again to someone else.’’

Under new cycling laws introduced last October riders of all ages can use footpaths at the same speed as applies to the adjacent street.

Ms Bedford, 24, estimated the cyclist who hit her was travelling around 40km/h given the force of the impact and injuries she suffered, which required several days off work.

Police are still seeking witnesses to the incident and urge them to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
