A dark coloured Staffordshire bull terrier with white markings that was off its lead is responsible for killing the Adelaide Oval Hotel’s resident puppy Charli, the City of Port Adelaide Enfield says.
The council is on the hunt for the dog, while they also search for a man, a woman and a young girl who were seen walking the staffie on Falcon Avenue at Hampstead Gardens.
Charli, a five-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel, was mauled to death while on a walk with one of her carers last Wednesday evening.
She was not yet living full time at the Adelaide Oval hotel, but visited multiple times a week to greet guests and quickly became “part of the fabric” at the venue.
On Thursday, a spokesman at the City of Port Adelaide Enfield said the council’s community safety team believed it was a dark coloured staffie, or similar dog, without its lead that mauled the puppy to death.
“On Wednesday … a male, female and young girl were seen walking along Falcon Avenue … near the corner of Gambia Avenue with an off leash dark coloured Staffordshire bull terrier type dog with white markings,” the spokesman said.
“This dog allegedly attacked and killed a King Charles Cavalier named Charli.”
Council workers were undertaking a “comprehensive investigation” into the incident.
They took several statements from residents and knocked on doors in surrounding properties, looking for witnesses and “interviewing alleged defendants”.
“However, to date, we have not been able to confirm the identity of the dog and owner responsible for this incident.”
The council called for the public to help in their investigation. Anyone with information, dashcam footage, or were just in the area on October 21 between the hours of 8pm and 8.20pm are urged to call the Community Safety Team on 8405 6600.
