Staff at the Adelaide Oval Hotel have been left heartbroken after their resident pup Charli was mauled to death by another dog on an afternoon walk this week.

An Oval Hotel spokeswoman said the five-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel was on a walk in the suburbs with one of her carers when she was attacked by another dog on Wednesday. Charli was rushed to a nearby vet, and treated for a day but succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.

Oval staff are traumatised by the incident, saying Charli was part of the fabric of the new hotel, which only opened to the public last month.

“Charli had quickly become part of the fabric of the hotel and was loved by all,” a statement from the hotel read.

“To lose her in such a way is heartbreaking. We will miss her so much.”

Charli was not yet living full time at the hotel, but visited multiple times a week to greet guests. Staff are being debriefed about the incident.

The spokeswoman said guests have been extremely supportive – sending their well wishes about the sad passing. They did not wish to provide comment on which council area the incident occurred in.

Dozens of people have taken to social media to express their sadness about losing the pup, with one person saying they are devastated to hear the news.

“Oh no, beautiful Charli, so devastated to hear such sad news,” they wrote.

An RSPCA spokesperson said they were horrified by the incident.

“Like everyone, we were horrified and saddened to hear about this awful incident that has cost this beautiful young dog her life,” the spokesperson said.

“We don’t know the full circumstances around what happened, and won’t be commenting on this specific incident while an investigation is under way.

“However, we encourage people to take their dogs to force-free dog training classes so that they can manage their dogs’ behaviour, and we remind people that it’s imperative that they have their dogs under effective control at all times when in public.”
