South Australia is set to cop another drenching over the coming days as a cold front sweeps across the state before clearing ahead of the weekend.
The showers are set to start falling later on Wednesday morning with 3-6mm forecast for metropolitan Adelaide as the front moves across from the Yorke Peninsula.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Simon Timcke said showers would be lingering throughout the day, accompanied by light winds.
“Not expecting any big totals today (Wednesday), but there certainly will be a bit around,” he told ABC Radio Adelaide.
The city is expected to receive the worst of the rainfall on Thursday when more than 10mm has been forecast.
“I think we’ll seem some heavier totals, we’re expecting a range of around 10-15mm for the city itself,” he said.
“It will probably be a bit wetter about the hills, particularly those hills to the northeast of the city.”
Adelaide is expecting a top of 15C for Thursday and winds are due to pick up throughout the day.
Beyond the anticipated deluge, there are positive signs for the weekend with a top of 20C forecast for Sunday.
“Temperatures are sort of slowly rising late week and over the weekend and at this stage it looks like a mostly dry weekend with some sunshine on Sunday in particular,” Mr Timcke said.
It comes as former Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Darren Ray announced Australia is looking ahead to a “wet and woolly” summer and a soggy Christmas for SA.
The country should expect above average rainfall and cooler temperatures through to the end of the year.
Mr Ray said South Australia’s increased rainfall over the past few years was the product of two major weather events, La Nina and a negative Indian Ocean Dipole.
