Cocaine Cassie shows off new look after leaving prison

Convicted South Australian drug smuggler “Cocaine Cassie” has touched down on Australian soil for the first time since her arrest in Colombia five years ago.

Cassandra Sainsbury, who was dubbed “Cocaine Cassie” after she was arrested in Colombia in 2017 for trying to smuggle 5.8kg of cocaine out of the country inside headphone cases, arrived at Sydney airport on Friday with new wife Tatiana, the Daily Mail Australia reported.

Sainsbury, who is originally from Yorketown on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula, remained tight-lipped at the airport, declining reporters questions.

Sainsbury was sentenced to six years over the drug smuggling but was released in 2020, having served half of that sentence.

Her parole conditions required that she stay in Colombia for 27 months following her release from the El Buen Pastor women’s prison where she was engaged to a fellow inmate.

In May, The Advertiser reported Sainsbury’s homecoming plans, which she shared with followers in a live stream question and answer session with her Instagram followers.

“I’m excited to go back (to Australia) yes – don’t get me wrong, my life is pretty much here in Colombia, and I’m starting a new English school, I’m married, I’m projecting myself in the best way possible,” Sainsbury said.

“But I’m excited to come back and I guess close this chapter, because I feel like until I go back home I’m never going to be able to close that chapter.

“I’m excited to see my family, excited to eat a meat pie, because here they don’t have one, iced coffee, I mean they have Starbucks here but it’s not the same as Farmer’s Union Iced Coffee.”

Sainsbury married her wife Tatiana earlier this year and said her life was one of a kind.

“Married life is the same, it’s exactly the same, just having someone by your side to guide you, to hold your hand through the s**t that happens,” she said.
