Cassandra ‘Cocaine Cassie’ Sainsbury tells Instagram fans of homecoming plans

The convicted drug smuggler has revealed what she’s desperate to eat when she gets home to SA – and why she won’t live here permanently.

Cocaine Cassie shows off new look after leaving prison

Convicted drug smuggler Cassandra “Cocaine Cassie” Sainsbury has revealed she plans to visit Australia soon to “close a chapter in her life” but will not live here.

In a livestream on her private Instagram account, Sainsbury answered a series of questions about her personal life, and opened up about her break-up with ex-fiance Scott Broadbridge.

“I’m excited to go back (to Australia) yes, don’t get my wrong, my life is pretty much here in Colombia, and I’m starting a new English school, I’m married, I’m projecting myself in the best way possible,” Sainsbury said.

“But I’m excited to come back and I guess close this chapter, because I feel like until I go back home I’m never going to be able to close that chapter.

“I’m excited to see my family, excited to eat a meat pie, because here they don’t have one, iced coffee, I mean they have Starbucks here but it’s not the same as Farmer’s Union Iced Coffee.”

The young woman faced more than 20 years in a Colombian prison after she was caught with 5.8kg of cocaine hidden in her luggage while trying to leave the country in April 2017.

She was released from prison in 2020 after serving three of her six year sentencing having secured a plea deal.

Her parole conditions allow her to return back to Australia at some point this year.

Sainsbury said she recently opened up a school to teach Colombians how to speak English.

“Ever since I’ve been here, I’ve always had this project that I started working on inside (prison) which is to offer English to low income families, to people who are in prison, to the families of these people” she said

”Because obviously here in Colombia, they charge a ridiculous amount of money to learn English.”

Sainsbury married her wife Tatiana earlier this year and said her life was one of a kind.

“Married life is the same, it’s exactly the same, just having someone by your side to guide you, to hold your hand through the s**t that happens,” she said.

The young woman has also just finished the first draft of her novel, which she said will outline “everything that has happened from start to finish”.

“It’s taken me a long time to write it because there were moments where I would write about certain things that happened that were really difficult, it was like I was living back through these moments again,” she said.

Four years on from her break-up with SA man Scott Broadbridge, Sainsbury said they no longer keep in contact.

“A lot of things contributed to it (the break-up) and as I said it was definitely the best thing that could’ve happened,” she said.

She said Mr Broadbridge gave away two of her four dogs after he said they had killed cats, which had “shattered” her.

Sainsbury initially claimed she did not know the drugs were in her luggage and that the 18 sets of headphones in her bag were gifts for her bridal party ahead of her upcoming wedding to Mr Broadbridge.

She said she was not aware the headphones had been stuffed with cocaine. However, Sainsbury’s story later altered to reveal she had been forced into being a drug mule by a mystery man who made threats to kill Mr Broadbridge and her family.

She said she was happy, and had learned a lot in recent years.

“Trust the progress, everything happens for a reason, it might be the worst thing that could happen to you, but over time it’s something I’ve come to learn and accept that everything really does happen for a reason,” she said.
