Cat gets fright of lifetime when snake gets caught in its collar

Snakes have already been found in plenty of weird places this season – but the experienced catcher had never seen one in a cat collar.

Snake caught in cat collar

A cat and its owner have been given the fright of a lifetime when a snake became caught in the pet’s collar and was dragged inside.

The juvenile eastern brown snake was dead by the time Snake Catchers Adelaide arrived just after 4.30pm on Saturday, but the cat, named Kit, was still running around the house.

Snake catcher Steve Brown said the owner of the cat was distressed when she made the call but he was close enough to be at the O’Sullivan Beach house in around 10 minutes.

“The owner took me to the house and showed me where the cat was,” he said.

“Kit was in the laundry, I opened the door and the cat was bouncing around a fair bit with the snake wrapped around its collar.

“I have no idea how it would have got there in the first place, I’ve been doing this for 15 years and the boss has been doing it for 35 and he’s only come across it once before.

“My guess is that the snake would have been thrashing around when it was being attacked by the cat.”

“The snake was dead by the time I got it. There was a bit of movement but that was just nerves.

“I gave Kit a quick check over and could see a little scratch on the inside of its lip from the snake.

“I recommended (the owner) take it to the vet where they ran a blood test which was positive to brown snake venom. The vet gave her antivenom and took care of her overnight.”
