Bruce Highway drug bust: South Australian men charged over marijuana bust

A roadside breath test on the Bruce Highway has led to a surprising find and two South Australian men facing drug charges.

A random traffic stop has uncovered a substantial marijuana stash in 45 bags in the back of a ute.

Two South Australian men are facing drug charges after Bowen police intercepted their ute for a random breath test on the Bruce Highway on Monday, March 1.

General duties police searched the vehicle after speaking with the men, allegedly uncovering 20kg of marijuana in a container in the rear tray.

The stash was found in 45 bags, each weighing about 500g.

The men, aged 50 and 58, were charged with possessing dangerous drugs and arrested.

They were remanded in custody and are expected to appear in Proserpine Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

In an unrelated incident, a Bowen man was arrested and charged after he allegedly refused to turn his music down despite repeated visits from police.

Bowen officers were called to a Gregory St home about 10.45pm Tuesday when a resident reported loud music.

Officers, hearing the music, agreed it was loud and issued the Bowen man a noise abatement direction.

Less than an hour later, officers were called back to the property and heard the loud music again, and directed the resident to lower the volume.

“Police allege the resident became abusive and refused to allow officers onto the property in addition to not complying with police instructions,” police said.

Police allege the man resisted officers during the arrest.

The Bowen man, 25, was charged with failing to comply with a noise abatement direction and obstruct police.

He is scheduled to appear in Bowen Magistrates Court on March 22.

A noise abatement direction means a resident may be guilty of an offence if a further complaint of loud noise is received within a four-day period of the time it is issued.
