Their friend Shakeena Abdulla, 19, from Davoren Park also died this morning after losing the fight for her life.

Ms Abdulla was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital to undergo several surgeries, but the swelling of her brain was too severe.

Before tragedy struck, the friends were going on a camping trip to Yorke Peninsula to celebrate Mr Rigney’s birthday, 7NEWS reported.

A mother of their friend has described the accident to be “pretty gut-wrenching” for everyone involved.

“They were all at the hospital supporting (Ms Abdulla), they were all hoping obviously that she would pull through, sadly it’s not the case and it has hit the group really hard,” the mother told 7NEWS.

“Sadly, he’s (Mr Rigney) got to live with this for the rest of his life as well.”

Mr Rigney’s brother and friend were following in another car behind them and witnessed the collision.

Their observations of the crash are expected to form a key part of the investigation. Mr Rigney was arrested yesterday and has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and one count of causing harm by dangerous driving.

He has been bailed and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court March 19.

Ms Abdulla’s death is the 7th life lost on South Australian roads so far this year, compared to 15 at the same time last year.
