Exclusive The Henley Beach brawl

Helmets were used as weapons in a wild brawl outside a popular Henley Beach restaurant on the weekend, just before a collision between a car and three motorbikes put two in hospital.

In exclusive footage obtained by The Advertiser, the brawlers are seen pushing each other into the glass doors of the restaurant as staff ushered terrified patrons out of harm’s way inside.

A bystander captured the video before the parties involved are alleged to have left the area on motorcycles last Sunday night, February 4.

The vertical footage shows at least seven men crowded in the middle of the pedestrian crossing outside Henley House, shouting and arguing.

One man yells “Let’s go c**t,” before another man wearing a motorbike helmet, who appears to be his companion, throws the first punch in a three against three brawl.

The two groups traded blows – with their fists and their bike helmets.

After mere seconds, the other group is eventually pushed against the glass doors of Henley House, behind which terrified staff can be heard marshalling patrons upstairs and away from danger.

The motorbike riders then use their helmets as weapons, before a man in a blue shirt who was trying to break up the altercation again steps in the middle and convinces them to move on.

The trio then leave on their vehicles while the other group disperses south on Seaview Rd.

Henley House staff can be seen trying to break up the melee and the person recording can be heard saying “It’s okay, it’s all on video”.

It is understood one of the parties were patrons at the venue before the brawl unfolded and went outside to meet the other group.

Not long after, at 11.20pm a Nissan-X-trail travelling north collided with three motorcycles at the intersection of Seaview Road and Grange Road.

Two of the riders, a 20-year-old Davoren Park man and a 20-year-old Elizabeth Grove man, were taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A third rider left the crash on foot.

Police have arrested the driver of the Nissan-X-trail, a 41-year-old Clearview man as well as the passenger, a 20-year-old Clearview man.

Restaurant manager Animesh Mallick, 38, was the last person to leave his venue, Stella, about 100m from where the fight unfolded.

As he pulled his car out onto Seaview Rd, he saw the entire brawl, which he said lasted “around five or ten minutes” and stopped traffic both ways.

“Henley Beach needs more police patrols for sure,” Mr Mallick said.

“I’ve been running this restaurant for five years, and around mid-December to January, there are thousands of people here during the day. It gets very busy and things like this can happen.”

Mr Mallick, who isn’t accused of any wrongdoing, said he witnessed another fight between two young males on Saturday night and that “something like this happens every couple of weeks”.

“We get lots of families, lots of children coming to the beach, and that’s a good thing, but we just need more security at night.

“When we talk to our customers about it, they feel that as well.”

The Nissan driver was later charged with fighting in a public place and two counts of causing harm by dangerous driving.

He was bailed to appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 18.

The passenger was charged with fighting in a public place and was bailed to appear at the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 4.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash. Anyone with further information who has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au – you can remain anonymous.
