A mecca for Mt Lofty climbers, cyclists and the eastern suburbs set has become the latest SA business to shut its doors. However the reason behind the decision remains a mystery.

A popular cafe and hub for hikers and cyclists alike in Adelaide’s leafy east has quietly shut its doors for good.

Base Camp Cafe Burnside has closed permanently, leaving little trace or explanation behind the decision with only a sign from Key Rentals Property Management left behind.

As of Wednesday morning, all posts from their Facebook page have been deleted with their Instagram page, which has over 1,600 followers, now private.

Located on Glynburn Rd, the cafe is a stone’s throw away from walking trails in the city’s eastern foothills, making it a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts and a favourite pit-stop for those needing to refuel after taking on the 7.8 km Waterfull Gully to Mt Lofty summit hike.

It was also a popular meeting spot with local politicians including former deputy premier Vickie Chapman and Liberal MPs Jack Batty and Josh Teague, along with well-known tennis coach and TV commentator Roger Rasheed.

Reviews from patrons on TripAdvisor described the spot, which had a 2 out of 5 star rating, as a “warm place for brunch with friends” and “one of the best” in Burnside.

However some claimed they had been treated poorly by “rude” staff with one user saying it had “the worst service ever” and another declaring that they would never return.

Owner, Boris Vidic, has been contacted for comment.
