A two-storey clubroom, viewing platform, athletics oval and netball courts are part of an unfunded $42m plan to transform the Lyndoch Recreation Park into a regional sporting precinct.

In anticipation of future growth, the Barossa Council is seeking planning consent to refurbish the park’s existing oval and build a new clubroom to hold up to 180 people.

The plan, lodged with PlanSA, also includes the construction of a new multi-use sports and athletics oval, four netball courts, a half basketball court and a playground.

Barossa Council mayor Bim Lange told The Advertiser the project would be “the most significant investment the council has undertaken”.

Mr Lange said the project would cater for the growth of the new suburb Concordia – which when established will comprise of 10,000 allotments and 23,000 people.

He said the council would apply for government funding but had budgeted a significant share of its own resources.

“The council will be considering the amount it will provide to the project in forward budget estimates,” Mr Lange said.

“There would be no reduction to existing services. There’s always a rate rise every year to keep up with inflation but we’re not anticipating anything further than that.”

To allow for the site’s expansion to a total of 9.9ha on Barossa Valley Way, the grounds would extend over a further three allotments, including a vineyard.

Mr Lange said the council had already purchased the vineyard – already zoned recreational – 12 months ago for just over $1m.

Once upgraded, the sports precinct would become the new home of the Barossa Districts Football and Netball Club with its former site at Williamstown to become part of the council’s eco-tourism plan to capitalise on the South Para Reservoir being opened to the public.

The Lyndoch redevelopment is key part of the council’s Big Project – a 35-year blueprint for investment into recreation, culture and social infrastructure.

As part of the Big Project, Mr Lange said the council had invested “in the order of $20m” to upgrade sporting grounds at Tanunda, Angaston and Nurioopta.

“The Big Project has been planned since 2013, it’s been a great community effort and commitment from the council, along with the support of federal and state governments,” he said.
