Chalk revolt: Van shames SA for ‘lowest paid’ disability workers’

A chalk-covered van calling for better pay for SA’s disability support workers is turning heads and stirring memories of a past controversial chalking protest.

A van has been spotted in Gawler covered in chalk writing demanding better pay for the state’s disability support workers.

In what for some is reminiscent of the Marshall government edict to stop South Australian ambulance officers from writing political messages on ambulance vehicles, a van apparently used by a disability support worker driving around asking to beep in support for better pay.

The messages on the van claim that South Australian disability workers are the “lowest paid in Australia.”

“Beep if you support SA Government disability workers fighting for a pay rise!!!”

The other side of the van describes the government’s Department of Human Services as the ‘Department of Horrific Shortages’.

In March 2022 the Marshall government successfully pushed for the state’s employment tribunal to stop ambulance officers from chalking messages related to the ramping crisis.
