Adelaide-born Australian of the Year Taryn Brumfitt will be rubbing shoulders with the President of the United States after she was invited to the White House for dinner later this month.

The body-image crusader, who rose to international prominence as the director of the 2016 documentary film Embrace, announced the news on LinkedIn where she said the President and Dr Jill Biden extended an invitation to dinner in honour of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

“If you know me at all you’ll know that when opportunity knocks, I’m always standing right behind the door ready to answer,” she wrote.

“I know from experience precisely how one meeting, one conversation, one idea sparked between two minds can change your trajectory and the world.”

Ms Brumfitt, who won the Australian of the Year award this year, said “the world feels different now than it did when I received this invitation just a few weeks ago”.

“But there is no better opportunity than this and no better time for our kids than right now to get back in there and influence outcomes in the country that influences so much of our global body image culture and narrative,” the writer and public speaker wrote.

The Body Movement founder will be attending the event with her colleague Dr Zali Yagner, who she collaborated with on Embrace Kids companion parenting book and Embrace Hub, a free resource for schools and the broader community.

The 45-year-old will be staying in the United States for a week visiting New York City, Harvard University, the US Embassy and of course the White House.

“This will be a whirlwind tour, squeezed firmly between a week of no less than six domestic flights, a charity lunch and a movie premiere this side, and the official launch of our first major program for young Australians on the other side,” she wrote.
