A man accused of murdering his mate after an argument about purchasing bikes has asked a court to release him on bail.

On Wednesday, Jonathon Malcolm Goodfellow, 30, faced the Adelaide Magistrate’s Court charged with murdering his friend Jordan Torrans.

Mark Seddon, for Mr Goodfellow, asked the court to release his client on home detention bail to his father’s address despite him being one of the prosecutor’s major witnesses in the alleged murder.

“I say there is no reason my client shouldn’t be able to reside with his father. It’s a stable address and his father is able to act as a guarantor if necessary,” Mr Seddon said.

“He has no risk of reoffending, or absconding.

“There will likely be a significant delay before a trial, likely over a year before Mr Goodfellow’s matter will be heard. Releasing him on home detention bail to reside with his father would reduce his risk to the community at a suitable home detention address.”

Mr Goodfellow was arrested and charged with Mr Torrans’ murder after emergency services were called to a Salisbury Downs address just before 7pm on September 20.

Neighbours allegedly rushed over to see what was happening, with one performing CPR on the 31-year-old father until paramedics arrived, but Mr Torrans sadly passed away.

In documents released to The Advertiser by the Elizabeth Magistrates Court following Mr Goodfellow’s first appearance, SA Police allege witnesses at the scene of the stabbing heard Mr Goodfellow crying, and saw him in a “panicked state” after the alleged incident.

According to the documents, Mr Torrans had attended Mr Goodfellow’s home to collect “money for bikes he had bought,” when it is alleged a fight broke out onto the road.

“He (Mr Goodfellow) stated during this altercation he picked up whatever he could, a small peeling knife or similar,” SA Police allege.

In his witness statement, Mr Goodfellow’s father, who was at home at the time of the alleged altercation, told police he heard his son arguing with Mr Torrans, and heard a “loud scuffle” outside of the home.

“(His father) saw that the suspect (Mr Goodfellow) was holding a kitchen knife in his right hand, holding it back behind his body, but with the blade facing towards the victim,” his police statement alleged.

“The knife was about 20cm in length with the blade about 10cm long.”

He told police he didn’t see what happened next, but saw Mr Torrans looking “unsteady on his feet and stumbling” before he collapsed on his back in the front yard.

Another witness allegedly heard Mr Goodfellow yelling “what have I done” and “why didn’t you stop me?”

The court on Wednesday heard Mr Torrans had been stabbed in the stomach four times.

Magistrate Brian Nitschke heard prosecutors would be opposed to any form of bail, as Mr Goodfellow had breached previous bail conditions and would remain a risk of reoffending if released on home detention bail.

“We say that there is a risk of him impeding on the police investigation if he moved in with his father and was able to speak to witnesses,” a police prosecutor said.

“He also has nine prior convictions of breaching bail agreements.

“He has ignored other conditions in similar circumstances, and we remain opposed to any form of bail.”

Mr Nitschke said he could not be confident Mr Goodfellow would obey bail conditions if he was released on home detention.

“Bail is refused,” he said.

Mr Goodfellow will return to court in January.
