South Aussies are bracing for a day of icy weather with gusty winds, showers and even small hail as the temperature plunges to a teeth-chattering 15C in Adelaide – and lower in the Hills.

A cold change has swept across the state, with Wednesday’s weather conditions set to bring rain, strong winds and small hail.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting 15C for Adelaide, with a medium chance of showers likely in the late morning and afternoon.

There is a possibility the hills and southern suburbs areas will be hit with hail.

Elizabeth will see maximum temperatures of 16C with a 60 per cent of showers, while Mount Barker has a high chance of showers as temperatures top just 13C.

But relief is in sight. The warm weather will return on Friday in Adelaide and Glenelg, as maximum temperatures on Friday and Sunday reach 23C, while Saturday will see cloudy weather with a top of 24C.

Elizabeth will be among the warmest parts of the state, as temperatures climb to 24C on Friday then 25C on Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures are set to top 23C on Friday, 24C on Saturday then 22C on Sunday in Noarlunga, while Mount Barker should get to 22C on Friday, then 23C over the weekend.

Sky meteorologist Alison Osborne said Australia would enter a “battle of the seasons”, as icy temperatures grip the southern half of the country as the north goes in to summer.

Ms Osborne said the wintry chill was brought on by a low pressure system and cold front.

“A cool, blustery south-westerly wind will be pushing across SA on Tuesday,” Ms Osborne explained. “Temperatures (are expected to) noticeably (drop) by Tuesday, cooling down across SA’s coastline.”
