The Country Fire Service has gained the upper hand in a fire that was burning out of control at Owen in the state’s mid north.

After previously issuing a watch and act message for Owen Rd and Days Hill Rd, the CFS has now downgraded the message, saying the threat is reduced.

A spokeswoman from the CFS said two homesteads were saved from the blaze.

80 CFS volunteers, along with 17 firetrucks, remain on the scene accompanied by farm fire units and aircraft.

The crews will remain on scene to cool the fireground down and ensure it doesn’t reignite.

The CFS is advising people to avoid the area if possible and say increased dust may effect visibility.
