A mother describes her son’s harrowing escape from the Holden Hill house fire

The Holden Hill woman says her son found himself in mortal danger when a lithium-ion battery in a massage chair spontaneously combusted.

A woman who lost her Holden Hill home to a fire on Monday morning said a lithium battery blaze in a massage chair almost killer her son.

The 63-year-old aged-care worker said her 40-year-old son who lived with her was sitting in the chair in the garage when the power sudenly went out and the chair began to smoke.

She said the four to five year old battery was not plugged in at the time and her son told her that it appeared to spontaneously combust.

The mother said although her son tried to put the flames out using water, he could not contain the fire as other flammable objects in the garage, such as paint and cans, began combusting around him.

He could not get the roller door of the garage open because the power was out and he began screaming for help.

Although the roof of the house, as well as the bedrooms next to the garage were on fire, the fire alarm inside the house had not gone off.

Although the roof of the house, as well as the bedrooms next to the garage were on fire, the fire alarm inside the house had not gone off.

Emergency services closed off the street and evacuated the neighbouring houses before extinguishing the fire – no other houses were damaged.

The woman said both her sons and her parents were impacted by the event, but she was grateful everyone was alive.

“He (my son) was just inconsolable, he came out and he just lay down on the pavement,” she said.

“We all came out and we were standing here, my parents were in shock – we’re all a bit traumatised.

“I just think, thank God my son wasn’t sleeping in his bedroom because they said the way the fire spread through the house, his room would’ve been first.

“My son is 6-foot-4 (195cm), he’s a big guy, it would have been hard to carry him out.”

Although her son was treated in hospital with minor injuries, she said all three of her children were devastated and traumatised from seeing their home go up in flames.

The woman said she was staying with her parents next door while her sons were staying with friends in the neighbourhood for emotional support.

She said she was expecting insurers to come and assess the damage of the house and hoped to rebuild it and live in it again soon.

The damage caused by the fire is estimated to be more than $400,000.

Davoren Park fire

Meanwhile, emergency services were notified of a fire caught between two houses on Peachey Rd in Davoren Park on Monday evening, about 7.40pm.

A command vehicle with 3 appliances attended the scene.

The MFS told The Advertiser the owners of the two properties were not present which forced the crews to use cut open the garage doors and make their way into the cause of the fire.

The fire was extinguished within 10-15 minutes with minimum damage to the carports of either houses apart from some external scorching and smoke damage.

The exact cause of the fire is undetermined but has been deemed non-suspicious by the crews.
