A mother and son have lost everything in a devastating house fire which erupted in the early hours of Monday morning.

The residents managed to escape their Holden Hill home before firefighters arrived as the blaze burnt through their home at around 2am, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.

Fire cause investigators have been unable to determine the cause of the fire but believe it was not suspicious.

While a lithium-ion power tool battery was found on the scene fire cause investigators are unable to ascertain whether it caused the blaze.

A neighbour Katie Hu said she woke up about 1.30am from the banging noises made by the fire.

“There were lots of booms and bangs heard, especially in the beginning of the fire,” she said.

“And a could hear the man (resident) screaming continuously but he didn’t seem to be seriously burnt or anything. We saw him being taken by the ambulance.”

The male occupant was taken to hospital and treated for shock.

Another neighbour – who asked to remain anonymous – said it was sad to see the mother and her son lose their house.

“The mother lived there mostly so she could be close to her parents, they’re in their 90s, so important for the family to be close,” the neighbour said.

“That house was built like 10 or 15 years ago exactly so that the parents could have their children close by and now its all burned down.

“You can see the roof has collapsed, and you can practically see through the house, there’s nothing left inside.”

The neighbour said she stepped outside to look at the fire and said she saw billowing smoke and at least 10 emergency vehicles.

“I would say there were 5 fire trucks, all big ones, 2 ambulances and 3 cop cars … and some of them stayed until 4.30am,” she said

The fire caused $400,000 in damage.
