A Mackay region music teacher accused of molesting multiple children has chosen to have his bail revoked and go into custody in a move to begin his “inevitable” jail term.

A lawyer for Brent Sean McKee, who is currently charged with 15 counts of indecent treatment of children, confirmed his client would plead guilty to some of the alleged offences.

It is alleged he was working as a music teacher and the offending occurred against multiple students between January and December 2020.

He was arrested in December 2020 and granted bail.

McKee’s matters were mentioned in Mackay District Court on Monday and it was heard some charges would be discontinued.

Barrister Scott McLennan, for McKee, said his client was waiting on a related matter which had just been committed from the magistrates court to the higher court “before his sentence”.

“He’s currently on bail for these matters but he wishes to have his bail revoked,” Mr McLennan said.

“Does he want that done now?” Judge Anthony Rafter queried, to which Mr McLennan said “yes”.

The court heard McKee wanted his bail revoked on all charges.

“Hopefully (he) might be in a position to be sentenced in the January sittings,” Mr McLennan said.

Judge Rafter addressed McKee confirming his name and if he heard the prior communication, to which he said “yes I have your honour”.

“You said you want your bail revoked which will mean you’ll be remanded in custody,” Judge Rafter said.

“Yes that is correct,” McKee said.

McKee has not yet entered pleas in relation to the charges and Mr McLennan told the court there was “no need” at this stage.

Judge Rafter queried if the bail revocation was because of an “inevitability” of the likely penalty.

“Yes … a submission has been sent … some of those charges will be discontinued, others will proceed by way of a plea of guilty,” Mr McLennan said, confirming he had received instructions from his client on this matter.

“He wants to start his sentence.”

As a result his bail was revoked and Mr McKee was taken into custody. Matters were adjourned to January 2023.
