Car fire causes traffic chaos on Bruce Hwy at Sunshine Coast

A dramatic car fire brought traffic to a standstill on the Bruce Hwy on Saturday afternoon, with footage emerging of thick grey smoke and flames pouring from the car’s bonnet.

Emergency services were called to the northbound lanes near the Roys Rd off-ramp at Beerwah, on the Sunshine Coast, just before 1.30pm after unconfirmed reports of a crash.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said they has received multiple calls about the fire.

“The front end of the car was well alight when we arrived and was in the middle of the highway,” she said.

She confirmed all occupants were accounted for and firefighters extinguished the blaze by 1.50pm.

Traffic was reportedly backed up for several kilometres, with Queensland Police Service on scene to assist with management.

Both lanes have since reopened.
