The alleged driver Jacob Steven Donn was charged with 14 offences and denied bail in Dubbo Local Court on Tuesday.

Ms Frail insisted her friend Bec Clarke let her borrow a mobile phone in hospital this week so she could respond to the torrent of wellwishers on social media.

“Oh my girl … wish it was me and not my babies,” Ms Frail wrote to one friend.

To another she said “I gotta keep fighting to make my babies proud”.

Ms Clarke posted an image of Ms Frail connected to medical equipment by tubes in hospital where she was sitting up, awake and had managed a smile.

“She has had surgery on her left knee and has had some plates and screws put in. Her right ankle did not need any surgery,” Ms Clarke wrote.

“She is still in ICU but you can imagine my surprise when I walked in and found her sitting up in a chair not long after surgery! Even the doctors are amazed at her strength and resilience. Hopefully she will be transferred back to Dubbo Base Hospital soon.”

She said Ms Frail knew she had the support of family and friends but “the hardest part is yet to come”.

The boys who lived in Emerald, Queensland with their father Joseph Shorey had been in Wellington visiting their mother and grandparents and had just been to the town pool when they were struck by the out-of-control Commodore.

“My heart’s been ripped out of me ... I’ve got nothing, I feel hollow,” Mr Shorey said after driving to Wellington and visiting a roadside vigil. He has since returned to Emerald and will begin planning the boys’ funeral.
